A Place for Close Listening
For too long, the ritual of deep, intentional listening has been a solitary pursuit, often hidden behind the doors of affluent homes. We asked: What if there were a place besides the home or hi-fi shop to encounter great sound? What if it were as accessible as the price of a drink?
The Kissa Spirit
Our inspiration comes from the listening cafés, or *kissa*, of Japan, which blossomed after World War II. These were atmospheric hideaways dedicated to cultural fellowship, where regulars could experience jazz masterpieces on huge horn speakers, surrounded by shelves of LPs. It was a public sanctuary for private contemplation.
Today, a new crop of listening bars is springing up across the West. For the first time in ages, people care about sound quality in public spaces. We are part of this revival, creating an American kissa where everyone can experience the magic of communal listening—of being engrossed in the music, surrounded by appreciative strangers.
